There Is Hope For Lung Cancer If Caught In Early Stages

A disease that is not common before the age of 40. The biggest cause of cancer is cigarette smoking. The more you smoke and the lower the age which you started the greater the risk.

lung cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US. It is the leading cause of death in men and second most common cause in women breast cancer being number one. The peak age for cancer is 65 years old.

Besides cigarettes living in an environment with high levels of pollution or working with radioactive minerals or asbestos also could put you at risk for lung cancer.

There are several types of lung cancer they are:

Squamous cell carcinoma

Small (oat) cell carcinoma

Adenocarcinoma

Large cell carcinoma

Symptoms and signs are:

Cough (chronic cough from bronchitis)

Coughing up blood

Shortness of breath

Chest Pain

Wheezing

Weight loss

Lung cancer can spread to immediate surroundings of the lungs to other parts of the body especially the liver, brain and bones. Pain may occur and weight may change drastically. a lung may collapse or pneumonia may occur. the pleura (membrane covering the lungs) may get affected and a condition known as pleural effusion (a collection of fluid between the lung and chest wall) may occur.

Usually lung cancer is discovered when x-rays show a shadow on the lung. To confirm the diagnosis tissue must be examined cytologically to look for cancer cells. the simple test is examination of sputum(phlegm) because cancer cells spread into the airway. A bronchoscopy may be used to examine the condition of the lungs or a biopsy (small sample of tissue) for analysis. Cells are collected with a needle inserted into chest. Sometimes an operation may need to be used to expose a tumor and excision of part of the tumor for analysis.

If cancer is caught in early stages pneumonectomy (removal of the lung) or lobectomy (removal of part of the lung) may be performed. Surgery is only possible in the early stages of lung cancer, or it only is located in one lung, and patient’s health is well enough for surgery to be performed. Anticancer drugs and tradition therapy may be used to contain the spread of a tumor or destroy cancer cells(usually the preferred treatment for small cell lung cancer).
